How to hire people who don’t need to be managed?


The biggest challenge of a growth company leader is recruiting. This is what we've found in our interviews and studies. Recruiting is critical because growth is not possible without the right people enabling it.

The challenge is that when the growth momentum is “on”, there are tons of other things to focus on besides recruiting. Also, hiring the right people takes time. You don’t want to invest your valuable time on making wrong choices. You want to hire people that don’t need to be managed and actually help save your time.

Sounds difficult, but it’s doable. There are plenty of things you can do to maximize your success rate in hiring self-driven people who share your culture and values. Here is my list of advice how to succeed in recruiting the best talent:

  1. Create a company culture that is based on inspiration. Make sure your new hires are onboard with the culture of inspiration. If they adapt the same way of thinking from the start, you won’t need to worry about how to motivate them. Inspired people are self-driven and highly efficient.
  2. Base your leadership on values that are applied in practice in every day. If every employee tells the same story to new hires, it helps to speed up the induction process. This way you scale your leadership and save everybody’s time. 
  3. Let the candidates interact with your team during the recruitment process. This will allow you to find out if the dynamics between different personalities work. When you involve your team in the recruiting process, they will be more excited to welcome new hires joining the team and committed to onboarding them.

When the growth really hits you, you don’t have time to manage everybody. You need to let people be self-driven and trust them. The easiest way to speed up onboarding for new hires is to create a company culture based on shared values. This way your whole team can act as a coach or mentor for any number of new hires. You can grow your business faster and have fun at the same time.
